Bukit Puteri, Kuala Terengganu

Description
Bukit Puteri (Princess Hill) is a 20-meter-high historical hill located right in the heart of Kuala Terengganu, just behind the bustling Pasar Payang (Central Market). This modest hill may seem unassuming at first, but it’s steeped in royal, colonial, and military history. Dating back to the 16th century, Bukit Puteri was believed to have been a lookout point and defensive fort for the Terengganu sultanate. The name “Bukit Puteri” ("Princess Hill") stems from local legends of a mythical princess who once lived on the hill and helped the villagers in times of hardship. During the reign of Sultan Baginda Omar (1839–1876), the hill was fortified to serve as a military defense base, particularly during internal conflicts.
